When a tie rod end is worn or loose, they may produce a clunking noise. Worn tie rod ends may also cause more play in the steering wheel, making turning more vague. That could also explain why its worse when you brake, especially with a rear ujoint, as the front of the pinion will tilt downward more from braking, thus increasing the angle even more.
I had that prob a long time ago after putting in a ford 9" rear in my CJ5. I just adjusted the rear's angle and it was gone. Also make sure your ujoints are timed the same, front joint with rear joint on each drive shaftso the "moments" are the same. I also made that mistake in my early days. Time the clunking. Is it in rythm with the tires every one revolution of the tiredrive shaft, engine? That should help you narrow it down. You could also just remove the front drive shaft and see if it goes away.

Clunk on turning My 86 CJ7 makes a "clunking" noise sometimes when I turn it, especially when pulling out of a parking space or curb where I have to climb a slight incline. I have checked the undercarriage and can't find anything that appears capable of making the noise.
I checked the motor mounts thinking that might be the problem, but can't find any that appear loose or broken. Has anyone had or heard of this problem? I don't want to be 50 miles from nowhere in the boonies and have something finally let go leaving me stranded.
Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I hope with your collective brains I can figure this out.

Re: Clunk on turning Collin, I didn't think of the front u-joints being the problem as it sounds like the noise if coming from the rear or behind the front seats at least. It is hard to determine where it is actually coming from since the noise is random and can't be duplicated on command. Again, thanks for all your tips.

My friend had a similar prob. It had a broken mount somewhere that was supposed to connect the axle to the chassi i never actually saw it, so i can't describe it that well. If it's a tj, then i would check for this. Even if it's not a tj, i would reccommend jacking the front up, checking for steering free-play, and watching the steering, suspension, and front end componets while someone is behind the wheel steering.

My track bar was loose when it was doing this. Jack up the front and get the wheels off the ground and see if it goes away when you unload the suspension.

Posted 03 April - AM Steering box is new as the old one was leaking. So I hope he isn't in there! Only notice it at slow speeds. I know my driver front spring needs to be rotated so it will sit in the notch for it. Can't get a spring retainer on it right now.

It may have something to do with the drive train or clutch. I had a Dodge Dokota 5speed manual transmission that made a clunk only when i took off from a stop.
After replacing the clutch and the having the transmission rebuilt, the clunk went away. So, if the clunk continues, i suggest taking it to a different dealer from where you have been going and have them look at everything again, including the transmission. Sure it's not the back door latch problem the 4 doors have? Mine pops every time I hit a bump.
